Gadget for the blind to alert them if they is too near something?

I would like to know if there are any gadgets out there that alerts the blind if they are too close to something.

I know this is the function of the white stick that they use. However, if such a gadget is created, what are the uses of it (in comparison to the white stick)?

So two questions:
1. Is there such a gadget?
2. What are they uses of it?

   I did see a show once and they had a clicking device and they used it as a echolocation device. On the show they had a few blind people demonstrate that they could ride a bike. You may be able to look that up.
